NTFB Social Services Assistance Team Gives Back During the Holidays
By Tonya Edwards, Director of SNAP & Social Services Assistance

As a North Texas Food Bank team that is mostly in the field serving our neighbors, it was important to me that we take time during December to catch our breath, enjoy each other’s company and have fun while giving back to our community.
During the Social Services Assistance team monthly meeting, we celebrated the season by working on three activities to support our neighbors:
- Together, we created motivational cards for children and their families who are receiving treatment at Scottish Rite for Children of Dallas. Together, we made and delivered 60 cards. We chose this hospital because of a direct connection with one of our team members whose child has been treated there. She said, “As a parent of a child who frequently spends time at Scottish Rite and Children’s Hospital, receiving cards during our hospital stays has always been a source of comfort. These thoughtful gestures help me find hope amid challenging times and remind me of the kindness and humanity of others.”

- We also created cards for some of our senior neighbors. The holiday season can be a very isolating and lonely time for our seniors, and we wanted them to know we are thinking of them. In partnership with NTFB Program Coordinator Rowena Roberson, we provided over 40 handmade cards to be included in the Commodities Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) food boxes distributed to low-income seniors in our service area.

- Lastly, each year the SSA team coordinates the NTFB Angel Tree program. This year was the largest to date, with gifts being provided to 230 families! We wanted to make giving the gifts as easy as possible for parents, so our team spent the last half of our December meeting wrapping hundreds of toys and other gifts. We are truly thankful to all of the NTFB departments and team members who sponsored a family, as well as to those who helped us with inventory, wrapping, coordination of delivery and pick up. NTFB also received support from Amazon, Primrose School of Breckinridge Park, Diamond Wishes and Jubilee Park Community Clinic. Read more about this year’s Angel Tree program here.

During their time in the field, my team is dedicated to ensuring neighbors have access to food by assisting them in applying for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and other benefit programs. They provide exceptional care for our neighbors, and I’m always proud to spotlight how they’re going above and beyond their day-to-day jobs, especially during the holidays.
