WFAA Telethon Raises Over 534,000 Meals for North Texans Facing Hunger

The fifth annual event was presented by H-E-B and held in partnership with WFAA and Tarrant Area Food Bank.

Thanks to a $50,000 matching donation from H-E-B, the fifth annual Nourish North Texas Telethon raised more than $178,000, or enough to help North Texas Food Bank provide over 534,000 meals to our neighbors facing hunger.

“Hunger doesn’t take a summer break,” said Mabrie Jackson, Managing Director of Public Affairs at H-E-B/Central Market. “We’re honored to stand alongside the food banks and WFAA to help families bridge the gap during these critical months.”

Held in partnership with WFAA and Tarrant Area Food Bank, the telethon took place from 5:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. June 26. Volunteers staffed phone lines to accept donations from the community while WFAA highlighted the work of NTFB and TAFB. They also put a spotlight on the need that exists in North Texas.

Dallas-Fort Worth now ranks as the third-hungriest metroplex in the U.S., according to recent data from Feeding America, with 1.3 million people who are food insecure, including 1 in 5 children.

In the 12 counties served by NTFB, more than 744,000 people face hunger, about a third of whom are children.

“Summer is a critical time for families struggling to put food on the table,” said Carolyn Mungo, President and General Manager of WFAA. “This telethon is one way we can come together as a community to make sure no child goes without. We’re proud to continue our partnership with NTFB and TAFB to raise both awareness and vital support.”

North Texas Food Bank is grateful for support from presenting sponsor H-E-B, sponsor 4Change Energy and to Indian Lions Club, which gave a generous $10,000 gift.
