Could I Qualify for SNAP?

Find out more about the eligibility requirements for SNAP, or food stamps.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, or food stamps), is the largest government program targeting hunger in the U.S. It helps low-income individuals, families and older adults afford the nutritious food they need, and it supports the economy. For every $5 in SNAP benefits spent at a Texas grocery store, $9 in economic activity is generated.

Can I receive SNAP if I employed?

Yes! In fact, most people between the ages of 16 and 59 must follow work rules to receive SNAP benefits. This means they have to be looking for a job, be in an approved job training program or work at least 20 hours per week.

However, several groups are not subject to these work requirements, including children, seniors, veterans, individuals experiencing homelessness, those 24 and younger who were in foster care when they turned 18, pregnant women, primary caregivers and those with disabilities.

What are the income limits?

In general, individuals must be living at or below 130% of the poverty line. For a household of one, that means a gross monthly income of $2,005 or less. For two, that is $2,712 or less; for three $3,419 or less; and for four $4,125 or less. (Add $707 for each additional family members.)

Can I have money in savings?

Yes. The resource limit for SNAP is $5,000.

Does my car count against me?

Your vehicles do count as part of your assets. However, the Vehicle Asset Test was updated in 2023 to better reflect today’s car values. A family’s first vehicle can be worth up to $22,500 and each subsequent vehicle up to $8,700.
